Plateau Excavation
When you think of a workplace accident, you probably think of something dramatic – an explosion or crash, for example.
But the second-most common cause of workplace injury is a trip or slip hazard that leads to a fall. In fact, nearly one-third of reportable injuries and 40% of fatalities in construction result from slips, trips, and falls. These injuries result in 50% more days away from work than other injuries.
Preventing slips, trips, and falls is an ongoing process that relies heavily on our people being able to recognize related hazards such as wet site conditions, debris, clutter, and unsafe stairways/ladders.
How do we reduce slips, trips, and falls on our construction sites?
- We must manage our work so that people can move safely around the site. The site should be kept in a clean and orderly condition to reduce the chance of injury from slips and trips. Good housekeeping on a project is a must.
- Make sure proper safety signage is posted throughout areas with any trip, slip or fall hazards.
- Make sure operators are maintaining 3 points of contact when climbing on/off equipment.
- Pay attention to your surroundings and foot placement at all times.
- Wear proper footwear.
There are a lot of moving parts on our projects which means there are a lot of things to be aware of.
It is easy to become complacent and forget to pay attention to something as simple as walking around the job site, but there are many situations that can cause a slip, trip, or fall. Everyone must be aware of where they are walking and performing work at all times.
Preventing slips, trips, and falls is an important step in continuing our Safe and Sound approach at Plateau Excavation.
As always, thanks for all you do on a daily basis to keep your employees going home every day to their families. I hope everyone has a safe and healthy month of August.
