Plateau Excavation

Plateau People – Bernardo Gomora, General Superintendent

With a strong foundation built on people, quality craftsmanship, and innovation, Plateau Excavation has become a leader in tackling advanced, large-scale and complex site development projects, but it is our people that truly make the difference and have moved the company forward.

  • How many years have you been at Plateau Excavation? 20 years
  • What’s your job title? General Superintendent
  • What exactly do you do at our company? My job includes managing different crews at multiple job sites simultaneously. A big part of the job is ensuring the workflow at a job site, which involves a lot of planning and communicating between internal and external stakeholders. This includes working with our extensive list of general contractors and subcontractors, which involves attending their meetings as Plateau’s representative. Not only is it about ensuring everything gets done, but it’s also about ensuring everything is efficiently done while maximizing our resources to deliver the best possible outcome, all within Plateau’s budget.
  • So far, what has been your favorite project? That’s a tough one. All the projects I have been involved with throughout my career have been a privilege to work on, and they have each taught me so much. However, my favorite project is Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta on North Druid Hills. I am incredibly grateful to have been a small part of creating a building where families will get the much needed help they need, and children’s lives will be saved.
  • How would you describe your team or the people you work with? The first thing that immediately comes to mind is the fact that they are hardworking and honest people. Every single one of them is willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done. They are willing to learn and able to tackle anything that comes our way head-on. Their resilience and work ethic make for a great team.
  • What advice would you provide to someone interested in entering this industry? The biggest advice I can give someone is to be willing to make the necessary sacrifices. I love working in construction. It has been my life for over two decades now, but I won’t sugarcoat it – the hours are long, the weather can be brutal, and the stress is incomprehensible at times; however, seeing how much your potential takes you, and the fruit of your labor come into fruition right before your eyes, makes it incredibly worthwhile.
  • What is your favorite aspect about your job, Plateau, or the industry? My favorite aspect of my job is getting able to be a part of a team that takes something old and turns it into something new. It never ceases to amaze me how we can take a lot filled with dirt, shrubs, and buildings, that are on their way to collapsing, and turn it into something new, and useful that positively impacts the community.
  • What drew you to Plateau originally? Well, initially I was working with a group called Aiken Grading Company. Eventually, Aiken merged with Plateau and the rest is history.
  • What is something unique about you (a fun fact) that few people know? I love fitness, sports, and everything in between.
